Careful preparation the key to success

A new survey conducted by Adecco Staffing US revealed that 71% of recent college graduates regret not doing more to prepare for entry into the job market while in college. The survey, which was conducted to assess the recession’s economic impact on the career paths of “Generation Recession” graduates, was administered to 503 college graduates between the ages of 22 and 26.

The results are as follows – 26% of respondents indicated they wished they’d started their job search earlier, 29% indicated they wished they’d spent more time networking, and 26% indicated they wished they’d applied for more jobs prior to graduation.

“This regret is likely a by-product of many graduates’ current employment situation,” claims Adecco. 43% of the survey’s respondents are currently working in jobs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree, and only 40% are employed in the field they studied in college!

What does this mean for the class of 2011? According to Adecco, we’ll be in good shape if we look to the graduates who came before us and learn from their experiences in finding employment. Basically, we need to be more proactive and start the job hunt as early as possible. Career fairs, internships, temp work, you name it, we need to be on top of it. Blah blah blah. I know this already. I know YOU know this already.

But should we really be trying harder to find a job in our fields of study? Maybe it would be smarter/more practical to switch our fields of study altogether. Of course, if you’re a graduating senior like me, then it’s a leeetle too late for this option. But if you’re a freshman or a sophomore, you might be better off (in terms of finding employment after graduation) studying something that’s a little more in demand. Now, I’m not saying students should go major in a subject they hate just so they can be miserable after graduation in an easier-to-get job. I think we need to find a better balance between what makes us happy and what ensures our livelihood.
